sovereign kestrel of redspire

she/her | 90 moon | 442 words

In the last few evenings, the gentle orchestra of greenleaf’s insects had gone from a fantastical concert every sunset, to a pathetic buzzing. The cool leaffall breeze stole their symphonic notes, and left behind only the high pitched soprano songbirds who made for their nests before the moon rose too high in the sky. Grasping and pecking, they fluttered to and fro from the berry bushes to their nests in the nearby trees, and Kestrel felt her jaw slacken with hunger. She paused, and turned to ensure Urchin wasn’t trailing too far behind.
[break][break]
It’s not much further now,” the Sovereign’s voice, once warm and bubbly and now worn brittle with seniority drawled out, ”- we’re close.
[break][break]
Food was the reason why she had invited her Heir, Urchin, to leave the comfort of the Court and head toward the Songbird Gardens, with the promise of a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. But they didn’t need to hunt necessarily - the Court was well-fed. It was Kestrel, who for all of her aloofness and solitary habits, had just wanted some simple alone time with her daughter. Since Urchin had risen from the ranks to her rightful place beside her as Heir, there were new responsibilities and expectations placed upon her. Kestrel wondered how she was handling it, how it felt for her daughter to have the eyes of the Court judge her every move under even further scrutiny than before.
[break][break]
It was never easy being part of the family of Redspires, and that was not something addressed. The burden of royalty was better left unsaid, unless they wished their ego to grow further than it already had. Attention does not mean perfection, only expectation. Or so the family saying went.
[break][break]
Sovereign Kestrel led them carefully past a bush with particularly nasty thorns to a clearing where waves of soft grass lapped at the remains of a once beautiful stone wall. Grey six-toed paws stepped carefully around the smallest pebbles till they found the larger slabs at the top and positioned the dainty leader with a wonderful view of the setting sun. Its orange and red hues had just begun to bathe the clouds, and had lit an internal fire within them. It would be awhile longer still till the sun made it’s nightly descent into the waiting waves of the ocean, but the evening had truly begun.
[break][break]
So, with a gorgeous view of the sun settling into the ocean and the Court of the Spire’s silhouette there to add to the charm, the Sovereign turned to her Heir and asked the simple question that was never simple at all,
[break][break]
So, how’re you doing?

heir urchin of redspire
❤︎ she/her, 16 moons
The slight changes between greenleaf and leaf-fall always captured Urchin’s interest. The air grew crisper, the leaves displayed touches of color, and darkness fell faster. A variety of mushrooms and interesting foliage grew around the castle and the Court’s territory. The salmon began to run upstream, too, which signaled the start of the Crown Festival, her favorite. The young she-cat liked to watch it all unfold.

With the land in that transition state, Urchin walked with a spring in her step. Her eyes traced the path of the songbirds as they flitted overhead. She counted the bugs that buzzed around. There was even a small patch of white mushrooms by her paws as she followed her mother. Despite her divided attention, she caught the Sovereign’s words.

Ears angled, she moved faster to catch up and walk along Kestrel’s side. She hummed a response as the castle’s stonework yielded stretches of shrubland with crumbled stone strewn about haphazardly. As they rounded a thorny bush, a felled wall greeted Urchin’s gaze. Once the Sovereign climbed to the top of the decrepit structure, Urchin nimbly followed her path to the top.

The sun, as round and orange as an egg-yolk, perched in the blue-orange sky, swathed by pink-tinged clouds. The view was captivating as the sea’s waves danced with the sunset, interrupted only by the castle’s spires. It was a long moment before Urchin pulled herself away.

She settled on a stone and finally fixed her full attention to Sovereign Kestrel. Heir Urchin’s jaw worked as she considered various answers. While her mind had been surprisingly quiet on their short trek, she had a lot to think about overall. She was the Heir now. That was more responsibility than anything Urchin held before. Yet… she didn’t feel too different. Maybe it was because she hadn’t yet delved into her position. Maybe, and more likely, Urchin always knew her pawsteps would have to follow the Heir path. That weight forever stood upon her shoulders as a Redspire.

“I am fortunate that my Crossroads was a success,” she began. “And I look forward to my new duties.” It was the safe answer between Sovereign and Heir. But between mother and daughter, it was different. Urchin didn’t know how to vocalize it. While she was groomed from birth to be ready, she didn’t know how to be the Heir in practice.

“Do… you think I’m ready?” Urchin asked quietly. Her eyes shifted back to the horizon as her tail tip twitched.
